Final Fantasy VIII is an electronic RPG game developed and published by SquareSoft in 1999, being the eighth main title of the Final Fantasy series.
The game was the second of the franchise to use three-dimensional graphics and the first to consistently employ characters of realistic proportions, also introducing a new system of magic that removed the traditional conjuration with magic points. The story takes place in a world that combines elements of fantasy and science fiction, following a group of young mercenaries led by Squall Leonhart and working for an organization called SeeD. The development of Final Fantasy VIII began in 1997, being directed by Yoshinori Kitase and produced by Shinji Hashimoto. The game was well received by critics, who praised its originality and scope. It was also a major commercial success, collecting $ 50 million in just thirteen weeks and becoming the fastest selling Final Fantasy in history until the launch of Final Fantasy XIII in 2009. Final Fantasy VIII characters use special attacks called "Limit Breaks", as in Final Fantasy VII. Although Limit Breaks in Final Fantasy VII are triggered after the player has received enough damage in Final Fantasy VIII, the availability of Limit Breaks depends on whether the character's current health stage is at risk, and it is possible to use the Limit Break option.
